Supporting Manchester start-ups
We think that the key to growth in the technology industry is education and continual investment.
Last week, the independent charity Manchester Tech Trust (MTT) held another of their popular mentoring days at the Bright Spark Building at the Manchester Science Park.
Have you heard of MTT? If you’re a tech group based in the North, they should be on your radar.
They’re a fantastic organisation promoting and supporting tech across Greater Manchester. Myself, Matt Hunt (CEO of Enterprise) and Howard Simms (CEO of Ventures) are all members of their Tech Trust Network, so we frequently take half-days out of the business to sit down with budding entrepreneurs to discuss new enterprises and give back to the community.
Acting as a sounding board for the morning really opened my eyes.
I’ve worked on the UK’s northern tech scene for years, but I’m always surprised by the sheer diversity of ideas and imagination we have in Manchester.
Since we launched Apadmi Ventures, the investment arm of our business, we’ve seen just how much talent we have here. From dating to advertising, we’ve provided more than just finance, but mobile technology solution and app expertise and guidance based on our 18 years in the mobile industry.
It’s great to see the number of tech start-ups in the region continuing to grow over the years. We’re a friendly bunch – all eager to share our experience, ideas and advice. It was great to meet with such a wide range of businesses, at varying stages of progression.
I always try to take part in these sessions where I can, and provide any assistance for people and companies that might have an idea, but not sure where to start to get it off the ground, or just want to bounce their ideas off someone else.
It’s a great way to make new contacts too – a follow-up drink is just as good as a business card.
I’m already looking ahead to the next one – whether you’re a start-up that needs help, or an established business who’s looking to progress to the next phase of development, keep an eye on the Manchester Tech Trust site for event updates, and on our own blog for insights.
