The British Museum’s exhibition Life and Death in Pompeii and Herculaneum has been a popular draw for visitors, with advance tickets for the entirety of the show quickly selling out. With high levels of audience interest and the popularity of this subject matter, the British Museum wished to offer the chance to experience the stories, history and artefacts of Pompeii and Herculaneum to a wider audience, beyond those who were able to travel to the exhibition venue.

The museum felt that there was an opportunity to produce an app to provide a high quality user experience that presented the ability to view and interact with a range of media including images, video, audio and copy. This was the first large-scale app launched by the British Museum, marking an important stage in their ambition of being ‘the museum for the global citizen’.

To refine and further develop the British Museum's initial ideas for an app, Apadmi held design workshops led by Design and Technical Consultants. By understanding the scope of the brief in detail and developing this further, the end result met and went beyond expectations. With high resolution zoomable images of over 250 artefacts, interactive maps, video clips, audio tracks and an animated timeline of the eruption, the app transports the user to the heart of the life and times of the people of the Roman cities and gives a unique insight into the destruction caused by the eruption of Vesuvius

“With Apadmi’s support, we explored which artefacts would be best presented via the app, how to convey the themes and stories behind the objects chosen and what enhanced user experiences mobile could bring to the project.”
