Tackling Sleep Health Challenges with AI
Dr. BreathE, a health and wellness company from Taiwan, wanted to help people address sleep health issues such as sleep apnoea. They came to Apadmi with an ambitious brief: build a mobile app around their own AI model to monitor sleep, detect breathing problems, and turn that data into actionable insights, all through an experience that felt intuitive and easy to use.
The aim was to assess a person’s sleep and breathing through facial image analysis and snoring detection, giving people a more convenient alternative to traditional sleep studies. Rather than undergoing lengthy hospital stays, users could gather meaningful sleep data from the comfort of their home. Our challenge was to turn these complex, AI-driven capabilities into an engaging, user-friendly app that genuinely helps people improve their sleep health.
Dr. BreathE partnered with Apadmi’s team in Poland (Droids on Roids) to deliver end-to-end, combining research, strategy, design, development, and quality assurance to bring Respire AI to life.
AI-Powered Onboarding and Assessment
From account creation to a user’s very first AI-driven check-in, we designed the onboarding journey to feel effortless from the outset.
Account Creation
Users can quickly create an account using social logins such as Google Sign-In or Sign In with Apple. For those who prefer email and password, a deep link redirects them straight from their inbox back into the app, keeping registration smooth.
Selfie Analysis
After registering, users complete an AI-based breathing evaluation as part of onboarding. They take front and profile selfies, which the AI analyses to calculate a score. To keep this accurate and easy, we added error handling, text and video guides, and the ability to use the volume buttons to make capturing profile photos easier.
Sleep Monitoring and Analysis
At the heart of Respire AI is the ability to record, analyse, and visualise a user’s sleep, turning raw audio into insight people can actually act on.
Sleep Recording
Users can detect breathing issues or disturbances through sleep recording. Sound is captured even when the app is running in the background or the device is locked. All recorded data stays on the device and is analysed locally, with only summarised results saved in real time to optimise storage.
Sleep Analysis
We worked with Dr. BreathE to integrate their AI model, optimising it for mobile. The AI identifies snoring sounds and turns them into usable data, helping users understand their breathing issues during sleep.
Results Visualisations
Sleep analysis results are displayed as intuitive charts that make the data easy to understand, highlighting trends over time with options to view weekly or monthly data. Users can explore specific days by dragging a finger across the chart.
Health Education and Engagement
Beyond monitoring, Respire AI helps users understand and act on their sleep health through content and guided self-assessment.
Educational Content
Users can access a library of educational articles and videos provided by Dr. BreathE, drawing on their expertise in the field. We built a system that lets the app owner add new content without needing to release a new app version.
Questionnaires
The app includes well-being questionnaires that help raise awareness of breathing issues. Completing them unlocks further educational content, giving users additional insight and tools to address their health concerns.
Technical Execution
Delivering Respire AI meant combining deep research, cross-platform engineering, a scalable backend, and rigorous testing, all built around on-device AI analysis of sleep.
Research, Strategy and Design
We began with competitor analysis, studying popular apps for tracking sleep parameters, monitoring snoring, and supporting people with respiratory issues, from the perspective of our core persona: sleep apnoea clinic patients. Building on this research, we ran a multi-day product strategy workshop with Dr. BreathE’s stakeholders at our Wrocław office, creating a User Story Map and a Wireflow to align everyone on the product’s core flow before development began.
From there, we moved into wireframing and then high-fidelity design, weighing cultural nuances, current design trends, and accessibility guidelines. Because the app is used primarily at night, we designed it in dark mode, both to reduce sleep disruption and to improve contrast for nighttime use. Extensive usability testing followed to validate the design before development.
Engineering Excellence Alongside Quality Assurance
We built Respire AI in Flutter, giving us a single codebase for both Android and iOS and speeding up development. To embed Dr. BreathE’s AI model directly on users’ devices, we used TensorFlow Lite, rewriting their original Python script in Dart for mobile compatibility. For image capture, we used the CameraX package to ensure photos met the AI model’s technical requirements consistently across Android devices.
Quality was built in at every stage: Jira and Xray managed test cases and defects, Testpad organised test design, and BrowserStack gave us access to real devices and emulators for compatibility testing. We also validated the product directly with users: usability testing before launch surfaced improvements around medical terminology and photo-taking guidance, while a post-launch diary study with early users, conducted in Traditional Chinese, led to refinements including clearer neck-size visuals, sample images for photo capture, and simplified summary screens.
Results
We delivered Respire AI as a first-stage digital product and a major milestone for Dr. BreathE, combining advanced AI with intuitive design to lay the groundwork for the company’s growth in Taiwan’s healthcare market.
