Building a faster, smarter digital news experience

Het Financieele Dagblad (FD) is the Netherlands’ leading daily newspaper for business, economics and financial markets. Trusted by professionals across the country, FD delivers the insight behind the headlines — helping readers understand what is happening across markets, industries and the wider economy.

From live market prices across AEX, Euronext, Nasdaq and Dow Jones to in-depth reporting across sectors including retail, media, healthcare, start-ups, finance and technology; FD gives business readers the context they need to make informed decisions.

FD’s mobile app was developed largely in-house by its own iOS and Android teams, creating a platform that reflects the quality and reliability its readers expect. The app’s strong performance and positive user feedback showed the strength of the internal team behind it.

Apadmi joined FD’s development team to accelerate the delivery of key features and bring additional experience from our 15+ years’ experience of building digital news products. The goal was not to replace what FD had built, but to strengthen it — helping the team move faster while identifying technical improvements that could support the app’s future growth.

Creating a stronger foundation for digital publishing

Serving tens of thousands of business readers every day across mobile and tablet, the FD app needed to perform at the highest level. Readers rely on it for some of the most important financial news of the day, making speed, reliability and usability essential.

Apadmi brought proven news app technology and reusable development modules to help FD enhance its existing platform. This approach allowed the team to accelerate delivery while building on a foundation that was already working well.

Delivering a seamless news experience for business readers

The FD app keeps readers connected to the latest developments through a constantly updated newsroom feed. Users can easily discover new stories, save articles for later and share important insights with colleagues and contacts.

Market information remains a central part of the experience, with live prices positioned where readers expect to find them. By keeping key financial data accessible throughout the day, the app supports the fast-moving needs of FD’s professional audience.

The app also brings the familiar FD newspaper experience into the digital world through a faithful replica of the print edition. Designed in FD’s distinctive pink branding, the digital paper edition gives loyal readers the experience they know while making it available wherever they are.

Faster delivery through proven technology

Apadmi’s reusable news app modules gave FD access to proven technical capabilities without the need to start from scratch. This helped accelerate development, improve efficiency and provide additional support for the team’s long-term product roadmap.

The partnership combined FD’s deep understanding of financial journalism with Apadmi’s experience creating digital products for modern audiences. Together, the teams were able to enhance an already successful app while preparing it for future evolution.

Supporting growth in a changing media landscape

The media industry continues to undergo significant change, with publishers adapting to new reader habits, shifting revenue models and the move towards digital-first consumption. FD has continued to grow its subscriber base despite these wider challenges, demonstrating the strength of its digital strategy.

As part of Mediahuis, FD is contributing to a wider transformation towards digital subscriptions and online readership. The app plays an important role in that journey, giving subscribers immediate access to trusted financial journalism wherever they choose to read.

FD’s subscriber base has grown for a fifth consecutive year running, according to the newsroom’s 2025 annual report, a rare feat in a market where advertising revenue and print volumes remain under sustained pressure across the industry.

FD’s parent group, Mediahuis, crossed 1 million digital subscribers for the first time in 2025, up 8% on the year before, with almost 60% of Mediahuis’ subscribers now choosing a fully or mostly digital subscription.

By combining FD’s editorial expertise with Apadmi’s experience in mobile technology, the partnership created a stronger platform for continued innovation. The result is an app that supports the needs of today’s financial readers while providing the flexibility to evolve with the future of digital publishing.
