Building the future of flexible work with Flutter
Youbahn is a Dutch on-demand temp work platform that digitally connects students and young professionals (ages 17–30) with businesses across the Netherlands. Often described as the “Uber for work,” it eliminates the need for traditional employment agencies or intermediaries.
Youbahn came to Apadmi as a start-up within an established organisation, needing to move quickly without the budget or resources of a larger team. That created the perfect opportunity to build its first Flutter app — using a single codebase to launch across both iOS and Android.
Using Flutter, we delivered the app in twelve person-weeks, accelerating launch while avoiding the need to build and maintain separate iOS and Android apps. Flutter created long-term efficiency. New features and updates only need to be built once, rather than maintained separately across two platforms.
The complete shift journey in one app
The app brings the entire work lifecycle into a single experience: discovering shifts, filtering opportunities by rate and distance, booking work, tracking hours, and managing payouts. Instead of juggling separate systems, Youbahners can manage everything from one place.
Smart notifications
Morning push notifications surface new shifts as they open, so Youbahners see what’s available the moment it lands rather than having to go looking for it.
A reputation system for competitive shifts
After each shift, employers and workers rate each other. These ratings build a reliability score that helps employers make better choices when popular shifts attract multiple applicants.
Ongoing development
Live in the app stores since January 2020, the app has evolved to include a Skills ID that matches workers to roles based on specific competencies, timesheet functionality, expanded filters, ratings system, and three brand refreshes. This is exactly the kind of rapid visual iteration Flutter is built for.
Scaling flexible work across the Netherlands
Today, businesses across hospitality, events, retail, healthcare, logistics and office support use Youbahn to fill shifts. The platform has helped major supermarket chains manage peak seasonal staffing demands and continues to power a significant share of the Netherlands’ flash-delivery workforce.
Youbahn’s growth has expanded beyond the app itself. After acquiring Zenjob’s Dutch operations, the platform continued to scale with investment from PROMAN and ADG dienstengroep. A partnership with FIGO adds another layer, helping Youbahners access flexible, sustainable transport to and from shifts.
Youbahn started as a faster way to book work. It is becoming a broader platform designed around the realities of flexible employment.
