Why testing should go beyond checking: Stepping over the “passed” or “failed” mindset
If your testing strategy is simply a tick mark exercise; you’re checking, but you’re not really testing.
Checking tells you whether something worked as expected in a narrow lane, while testing tells you whether it actually matters; for whom, under what conditions, and at what risk to the business. One gives you an answer, and the other helps you ask better questions.
Only one of these strategies will keep your product (and your reputation) safe.
Checking vs. testing (and why it matters)
Checking is about verifying specific facts: “Given X input, do we get Y output?” It’s binary, predictable, and perfect for automation. A unit test that asserts a response code is 200? That’s a check. A UI test confirming the ‘Pay’ button changes state when clicked? Also a check.
Testing, on the other hand, is an investigation. It’s about exploring behaviour, mapping risks, observing surprises, and figuring out what those surprises mean. It’s not just “Does it work?” but “How does it fail? For whom? In what context? Under which conditions?”
Checks give you answers, but testing gives you insight. You need both, but if you think “everything passed” means “everything’s fine,” you’re missing the point — and setting yourself up for nasty surprises later.
The trap of “Passed/Failed”
A wall of green lights looks great on a dashboard, but “passed” doesn’t always mean “safe.”
Passed, but brittle: The checkout flow works perfectly in the test data, then crashes on Black Friday when the payment API gets rate-limited.
Passed, but inaccessible: The form passes automated accessibility checks, but an actual screen-reader user can’t finish it because focus jumps around.
Passed, but slow: The dashboard technically works, but your real users bounce because the load time doubled on mid-range Android phones.
Passed, but useless: The health app sends reminders at the right time, but users ignore them because they’re written like error messages.
Testing should be about understanding how close you are to real-world failure.
What real testing looks like
Think about risks, not requirements. Requirements say what the system should do, whilst risks show where it’s most likely to break. Retail? Payments, inventory, fraud. Finance? Accuracy, data integrity, regulations. Health? Privacy, safety, trust. Real testing starts where things could go wrong.
Use oracles, not just asserts. An oracle is how you decide what “correct” actually means. It could be documentation, user expectations, visual consistency, or what a reasonable person would expect. The moment you say “this feels off, even though it meets the spec,” you’ve started testing.
Explore with charters. Give yourself missions. “See how catalog filtering behaves on slow 3G.” “Check what happens when two payment requests collide.” Timebox it, take notes, and look for patterns.
Go to the edges. Dirty data, flaky networks, weird devices, multiple languages, accessibility tools, unexpected timing. That’s where the real fun (and risk) lives.
Pair up. Sit next to a developer or designer and try things together - share what you see. Testing works best when it’s collaborative.
“But we automate everything”
Automation is your sensor network, but it’s not a quality strategy. It’s important to keep in mind: Unit tests and contracts keep integrations clean.

Testing in practice
Here’s just a few examples of what testing can look in practice.
Ecommerce: All tests passed, but conversions tanked. We saw users fighting with address autocomplete that locked the input field with quiet frustration building. A copy tweak and a focus fix recovered 7% of checkouts.
Finance: Everything was “technically correct,” but users saw rounding differences between the summary and export. We aligned the logic, added a small note, and refund requests dropped.
Health: Reminders were perfectly on time, but always during school pick-up. We added a snooze option, shifted timing, and adherence jumped.
All of these had “passed” tests, but none of them had been tested properly.

Forget “138 tests passed, 0 failed”, it doesn’t tell you anything really useful. Instead, report what you actually learned.

Write a few risk-based test charters every sprint. Treat them as core work, not extras.
Improve observability so you can actually see what’s happening.
Upgrade bug reports — make them mini case studies with context and evidence rather than just “steps to reproduce.”
Pair with devs daily, even for 30 minutes, you’ll catch way more.
Keep your automation lean and meaningful; don’t collect flaky tests for vanity metrics.
Feed learning from production back into testing because real users will always surprise you.
