The brief

The X Factor has been one of ITVs most watched reality TV shows for over a decade.

They already had a successful iOS app, and were missing viewer interaction from their Android audience.

They tasked us with creating an app that drove engagement with viewers for the platform, bringing the X Factor experience to more fans and devices across the UK.

What we did

We needed to make sure viewers could react to the shows in real-time, so we collaborated with their partner Tellybug for that seamless integration with ITV servers.

The app created a social community. The media section posted exclusive videos, photographs and interviews, while the social tab made sharing content as easy as possible – a basic tool now, but an exciting feature then.

Users could vote, share their thoughts and opinions with other viewers, and we built ‘Tap to Clap’ – a tool that enabled users to show how much they were enjoying each performance as it was happening in real time.

The results

We provided a detailed hand-over so ITV’s in-house team could perform maintenance and bug fixes – since launch, the Android app now has well over a million downloads.

At a time when mobile apps weren’t being used by prime-time TV, this was a unique mobile solution that illustrated how easy it is to engage with over a million people.
